Fish and Shrimp Tacos at Home

Seafood tacos are best when the seafood is cooked near serving time and paired with toppings prepared in advance.

Prepare toppings first

Make slaw, salsa, crema, and garnishes before cooking. Warm tortillas and set the table so the seafood can be served immediately.

Dry the surface

Pat fish or shrimp dry before seasoning. Excess surface moisture interferes with browning and can make batter or coating detach.

Cook in small batches

Crowding lowers pan temperature. Fish should flake and reach a safe internal temperature; shrimp should turn opaque and firm without becoming rubbery. Use a food thermometer where practical.

Keep raw and ready-to-eat foods separate

Use separate boards, utensils, and plates for raw seafood and finished toppings. Wash hands and sanitize surfaces after raw seafood contact.

Quick checklist
